This is not a book for the faint of heart. It's filled with wild ideas, speculation, and some very strange stories by very respected scientists. Vallee is one of my favorite authors on the whole UFO problem since he is so sober and straight about everything. There is no "woo woo" new-age stuff here; these are scientists (astrophysicists!) really trying to parse out the UFO phenomena, and it is incredibly helpful to read about their struggles, thoughts, and surprises. This might not be a great introduction to the UFO literature since they do presuppose a lot of things, but for someone who has read a bit about it and wants a more sober and removed perspective, this is an amazing read. What are their conclusions? Well, basically, the scary part is that the only real conclusions are:1. SOMETHING is going on, but it's really hard to be sure what exactly the nature of it is.2. ALIENS (Extraterrestrials) are probably NOT the answer. Once you really look at the cases, this hypothesis makes less and less sense, and you realize that some folks are clinging to it because it has a certain attractive quality, but it simply doesn't explain most of what is going on.3. Skeptics who are so certain that it's "all in their heads" are not really skeptics, but are acting more like religious zealots who dismiss evidence before they review it because it doesn't fit with their world view. This is a worthwhile read for those who are actually interested in this problem.

What a great book! To have the conversation between Alan J. Hynek, the father of modern ufology, discussing the topic with Jacque Vallee.... pure gold! You can sense how they each influenced the other to consider the many possible facets to this deeply mysterious phenomenon. Both men are skeptical scientists, measuring their words and theories carefully, yet there is also a playful ease to their interactions. This isn't the best case history of UFO's/UAVs... for that I would recommend the "The UFO Evidence" by Richard H. Hall. This is more about the two key figures in this field of research, trying to make sense of the strangeness of it all. "The UFO Evidence" by Richard H. Hall, is just case after case, no opinions, no speculation! Just the facts! "The Edge of Reality" is more of a discussion about decades of findings, and is largely fact backed, but never the less opinions.

This is a wonderful resource book or research book, however I don't recommend it to casual readers interested in UFOs. The format is predominately dialogue, with the two authors having a discussion and usually a moderator cutting in every now and then the expound upon ideas or to shift the course of thinking within the conversation. However, if you like either author and research the history of UFOs, or research passed UFO cases, this has some great supplemental material.

Hynek and Vallee in one book!!! No more need be said. A must have for.the student of UFO's.

I have read numerous works by both Hynek and Vallee but I found this one possibly the most interesting. Of course it is a bit dated and the perspectives of both authors reflect the ideas and 'knowledge' level of the time; certainly it is clear that a great deal has happened since then in 'ufology'. The brainstorming sessions, the hypotheses and attempting to test them, reflect some errors and tangents, but it's marvelous to see what these two minds were able to come up with re these puzzling mysteries. There are few actual case studies covered; mostly the format is that of discussion on what the overall research problems are, what is known, what patterns of investigation need to be undertaken, the state of ufologist groups, etc. The reader must remember that the work reflected in these pages was before computers were widespread and the internet was still a mostly private domain.Hynek spends a great deal of his time defending himself from various critics and explaining his personal situation the USAF and Blue Book, the 'swamp gas' controversy he sparked, and similar. I think he is unfair in his own criticisns of Major Keyhoe's work and NICAP (Keyhoe's five books in this area are very good btw). Vallee tends to devote his effort to aligning ufology with mythology and folklore and launching into psychological aspects. I have my own doubts about the blending of reality with the paranormal, although once out on the 'edge' of reality as these authors sometimes are, things do get a bit gray...Overall the book is a great read and those interested in this area should not miss it.
