From the Back Cover
"The guidance to be found within these covers reflects the author's inspired ability as a teacher and artist of the highest magnitude. It is probably the finest book on the subject of drawing the human form that I have ever seen."—Irving Shapiro, A.W.S., Director, American Academy of ArtThis unique guide offers a bold, innovative approach to drawing from life. Instead of teaching the traditional method of building up a drawing from lines, leaving mass and tone till later, noted art instructor Douglas R. Graves takes precisely the opposite tack. The student is encouraged to begin seeing and thinking in terms of tonal masses immediately. This approach enables students to draw quickly and accurately without the need for a line drawing first. The author compares it to learning to "paint" with charcoal.Step-by-step demonstrations and over 200 of the author's own drawings offer inspiration and practical guidance in the technique. You'll learn how to "see" tonal quality, how to key a drawing, how to translate color into black and white, and valuable techniques for keeping the figure from looking "stiff." Other topics include the role of alignment in achieving proper proportions, foreshortening, male and female figure distinctions, the use of modeling to achieve added dimension, drawing the face, positioning the figure, and many other aspects of life drawing. For students of drawing—beginner to expert—this book is an invaluable guide not just to drawing from life but to the essential principles of observation, composition, and draftsmanship that underlie all successful drawing and painting. It belongs in the library of every artist. For this edition, the author has revised previous chapters and added a new one on "Different Modes of Charcoal."Revised and enlarged Dover (1994) republication of the work published by Watson-Guptill Publications, New York, 1971.

I recently reviewed a book on life drawing where the author used a painstaking process to make gorgeous pencil drawings. He focussed on building up tone through meticulous hatching and shading. (And outlining and measuring - very obsessive but rewarding.)This book also focuses on tone rather than line, this time in charcoal and without the rather anal measuring and outlining. In fact it is far more accessible to the average life student, because the methods Graves uses can likewise be used in a life class. You don't need days and days of posing. Nor do you need the foundation drawing skills required by the other book. This is a book which can be put to immediate use.And very valuable it is, too. Expect an improvement in your results the first time you put the lessons taught by Graves to use. You will find yourself looking at your model as a collection of tonal areas, rather than lines, and consequently your drawings will have more shape to them. They will be brought to life. The essence of Graves' method is to work with two tools - charcoal and a chamois. Tones are built up with the charcoal, and the chamois is used to lighten them. One early exercise uses a "wash" of charcoal to create a background and then shapes are picked out with the chamois to make the drawing. Darker values such as shadows are added with more charcoal. The book starts with the basics. Tools, media and techniques. All illustrated and described, along with exercises illustrated for the student.Chapters are presented as exercises, each focused on a different topic. Lines and shadows, proportions, alignments, composition and so on, each building on the last. Step by step the final image is built up from broad tonal masses to detailed shapes. Construction lines are shown and at each step Graves tells us precisely what he is doing and why.I particularly liked the illustrated explanation of the difference between lines and outlines. The body has lines, such as the creases formed when folding the elbow, and outlines, being the imaginary line where the body finishes and the background begins. Drawing body lines reflects reality, but drawing outlines imposes something that isn't there - we don't see bodies surrounded by lines - if the background and the body are the same colour they blend into each other, they don't form a line. Graves uses negative shapes to help define the outline, a much more natural and satisfactory method.Graves shows and tells in a pleasant, consistent manner how to improve our techniques. There is something here for all levels, but this book is perhaps best used by an intermediate artist rather than a beginner or an expert. A few basic skills help to get right into it, and if you are already achieving good results you may not feel happy about changing your ways.Having said that, Graves provides plenty of flexibility and new ideas to add to an existing skill base. This book *will* help you improve your style.Highly recommended to anybody with an interest in drawing the nude. Especially valuable to students attending life class for the first time.
Excellent book good information and instruction on how to use the different mediums, would recommend
The book has helped me, - a "beginning artist" -- to relax and start to see the subjects and my renditions in a more relaxed and "sketchy" way, especially when I begin a drawing. By starting with tone and making a sort of "charcoal wash", then taking away the negative space as the subject takes shape has been fun for me. As I progress toward rendering a more classic version of a subject, I find that "moving the charcoal on the page" is easier. The book has been eye-opening for me to ease up and stop over-rendering!
Great inspiration and instruction.
Wonderful instructions and illustrations.
This is a great book. Lots of drawings, some are printed a little dark so details are hard to see - a great resource for figure drawing artists.
Having learned to draw from Betty Edwards' "right brain" approach, this book is a natural follow-on. It teaches a painterly approach to drawing by capturing the masses, rather than the contours, in much the same way as DRSB does. I've struggled with contour drawing from the beginning, whereas I see the masses and tones very easily. The drawings in this book are beautiful, and it's great confirmation and affirmation of the DRSB training I've had. See my other review for DRSB.
Every single chapter is interesting.

This is the best sci-fi novel I've read in years. It captures the multi-generational sweep of Miller's "A Canticle for Leibowitz", the cautionary notes of Crichton's "Jurassic Park", the sobering reality of Heinlein's "Orphans of the Sky", and the engaging alien viewpoint of Vinge's "A Deepness in the Sky". And it combines all of these wonderful sci-fi tropes into a thoroughly original and imaginative story that starts out strong and picks up pace right through the last page. The writing style is purposefully creative (the shifting tense, which seemed quirky at first, turns out to be meaningful), and the crisp editing is a gift. The ending was satisfying -- as with "The Sixth Sense", elements of the story that had barely registered earlier took on new meaning at the end of the book, and as with many old "Twilight Zone" episodes I couldn't see the end before I got there. This novel is a worthy award winner and a must-read for long-time sci-fi readers.
This book totally surprised me. there are basically two story lines running side by side. one explores a new civilization as it develops literally from the ground up. that while the other story line provides a perspective on a developed society which turns inward and barbaric. both in the same time frame, same extra-solar planetary system. the science, tech, anthropology and sociological aspects are so exceedingly well integrated into the work, just wow!i have been an avid reader of science fiction my entire life. a gift my father passed on down to me. it is exceedingly rare for me to come across a book that is so unique in both the subject matter and how it portrays the 'big picture.' anyone who enjoys smart thought provoking science fiction will absolutely be thrilled by this book.
Yeah, it was very well written, original, and earned its awards. But it's also one of the most depressing books I've read in years. So be sure you're in the mood for a downer about how human beings suck, and how everything we touch is destined to end in senseless violence.Six hundred pages, a story that spans thousands of years, and every single character we meet is in it for themselves. There literally isn't anyone, human or alien, I'd trust to water my plants while I went on vacation, much less to watch my back in a dangerous situation. And the characters feel that way about each other, too.I'm not sorry I read it, but now I need to go find something lightweight and fun to cleanse my palate.
Tens of thousands of years after Earth has self-destructed in a horrific civil war, humanity has once again reached for the stars. In the Old Empire, which spanned Earth and several of the solar system's gas giant moons, near-lightspeed interstellar ships had begun to spread through the galaxy, terraforming the most likely planets where Homo sapiens might find new homes. Now, the technology of the Empire has been lost to time, mere hints of it accessible only to the classicists who labor to translate the old, dead languages of the meager records that survived the Empire's destruction. But the toxic wastes the war left behind have gradually rendered Earth lifeless. Now humankind cannot rebuild where it has lived for millions of years. The remnants of the human race have set out to relocate elsewhere in starships, each of which houses a half-million people in stasis. In Adrian Tchaikovsky's outstanding science fiction epic, Children of Time, one of those immense lifeboats is approaching the nearest terraformed planet after a journey of nearly 2,000 years. What they will encounter there is a nightmare: the unintended consequences of a biological experiment carried out by a lone survivor of the Old Empire: Doctor Avrana Kern.In fact, it was Kern's vision that was the proximate cause of the civil war that destroyed the empire. She had set out for the newly green planet with thousands of monkeys, intending to release them on the surface to build a new, untainted civilization made possible by a nanovirus that will speed up their evolution into thinking beings. Through accelerated evolution, Kern is convinced they will achieve what had eluded the human race: civilization without war. Aided by "the virus that would accelerate the monkeys along their way—they would stride, in a mere century or two, across physical and mental distances that had taken humanity millions of long and hostile years." Kern is, of course, quite mad. Her plan had triggered massive opposition and ultimately civil war within the Empire. And the scheme goes awry no sooner has her ship arrived in orbit around the green planet. Accelerated evolution will take root on the surface, because the nanovirus has been released, but not among the monkeys. The monkeys are all dead. The beneficiaries are the invertebrates introduced through terraforming and already living in large numbers on the planet: spiders, ants, shrimp, beetles.Tchaikovsky skillfully advances the threads of his tale through short, alternating chapters set on the planet's surface among the evolving spider population and on board the lifeboat bearing the remnants of humanity. A clash is inevitable. What remains to be seen is which species will dominate the others, and with what consequences.Adrian Tchaikovsky (or Czajkowski) is a Polish-British fantasy writer best known for the 10-book Shadows of the Apt series. Children of Time is his sole science fiction work in novel form.
Best hard science fiction book I've read in over 10 years. When I initially purchased the book for my Kindle Paperwhite, I didn't look at the page count and just stated reading. Two and a half days and 600 plus pages later (I do have to work), I finished this wonderful book. It's one of those books you cannot put down. I wont say anything about the story line because I hate spoilers, even little ones, all I will say is that if you like hard science fiction, you will love this book. Keep writing books like this Adrian.

#1,256 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
This is the first book I have read by this Author. It is so good that I will now read his other two. A dorky little kid named Billy tells the story. He and his Dad moved to this little island town when he was a toddler after his Mom died. His dad is The maintenance worker for rental cottages. Billy hopes to be a scientist and even does some rudimentary observations for a biologist at a college. One of the teen daughters of a cottage renter, he met this past summer, has come up missing. Police from all over came in to lend a hand in trying to find her on this little island to no avail.Billy decides he is going to use his observation skills to find clues in hopes he can pass them along to the police and become a hero and get his picture in the paper. He has to keep all this under wraps though because his Dad is real cautious about any spotlight being shone on them.Don’t let my poor review cause you to think this is a rudimentary story about a little kid and his sweet summer adventure. This is a psychological murder mystery with twists and turns. Fast moving. No long boring passages. The author keeps the story on track and provides characters that you like, hate, love. What Billy tells you is true but he doesn’t know the whole story, or does he.? There is a sub story here that is woven throughout the book. Glimpses of Billy’s past that finally come to light in a surprising way.I read it in 2 Days. I think that is a high recommendations of a good read.
I bought this book on a random whim while I was looking for something new to read. I liked it, the story was intriguing. I liked the perspective of Billy and as detective West was following leads I felt like she was on to something. Overall a pretty solid story I wouldn't hesitate to check out other books by this author.
I truly enjoyed this book. It took me about a week to get through the first third, but the last two thirds I could not put down and finished in a day, and I'm not usually a fast or terribly committed reader.Billy Wheatley is a wonderful character. He's so relatable and likeable, though he would not think so. The suspense was intense and I kept wavering on who I thought had abducted Olivia and whether she was alive or dead. The most exciting character in the book was the ocean. Living on the Pacific coast, I loved how well this author describes everything about a coastal community, the waves, the rocks and the marine life.
After reading The Wave at Hanging Rock I couldn't wait for Dunnett's latest book to come out. It didn't disappoint. Much of the story is seen through the eyes of a very bright eleven year old boy who doesn't always understand what he is seeing. This keeps the edge sharp. The tension builds throughout the book until the last third when I just couldn't put it down. I hope Gregg Dunnett is working hard on his next novel!
I bought this not realizing that Mr. Dunnett is also the author of one of my new recent favorites, The Wave at Hanging Rock. This story takes place in a small island off the coast of the east coast of the U.S. The first few chapters are narrated by 11 year old Billy, an unusual boy. He seems to prefer the company of adults than his peers; most of his interests aren't even on the radar of other 11 year olds. He is fascinated with marine life among other things and has little 'projects' littered across the island. He lives with his dad in a cottage overlooking the sea. Dad is rather inscrutable, and definitely has secrets. Billy loves him, but also fears him at times.A teenage tourist visiting the island goes missing without a trace, prompting months of help from mainland police, but to no avail. Billy decides that the police don't know what they're doing and that he will try to solve the mystery himself. What he finds sets in motion the rest of the plot. As with The Wave at Hanging Rock, this story goes in places I never expected. I loved the character of Billy; so precocious and logical, but at the same time, a child.
Overall the book was entertaining but I felt it did drag in places. The characters really didn't "grab me." I felt they were pretty one dimensional. Billy, the 11 year old kid, was OK but by 11 most kids have a little more personality than he did. I guess I was comparing him to my 12 year old grandson who has more smarts and more understanding of the world so perhaps this kid lived a more sheltered life. I especially didn't like how little regard he had for the life of the missing girl. Once he figured out she was a captive at Mr. Foster's he should have told an adult but just went on with his so-called investigation and came back a whole week later after she was "killed" or at least that was what he thought and it was ho-hum. Well let's watch a while longer and see how many more clues we can find. The ending wasn't bad but ended kind of abruptly after dragging out the rest of the story. It wasn't my favorite young adult fiction. I kept reading simply because I did want to find out who the killer was so it did keep the suspense there going through the whole book. That is why I gave it 4 stars.
The Things You Find in Rockpools is an enjoyable psychological mystery/suspense that is hard to put down. Once I began reading this book I had to finish it to find out the identity of the killer. It is filled with twists and turns that kept this reader engrossed. The characters are well defined with some you will love and others hate. Every worthwhile story needs both types of characters. The main protagonist is Billy. He is only nine years old but commands this story with his intelligence, scientific knowledge and innocence. There is a girl missing in his town and Billy feels compelled to assist the police by doing his own investigation since they are at a stalemate. What he doesn’t realize is his investigation is leading him into more trouble than he ever imagined. There are so many twists and turns making for an enjoyable romp right up until the end. I don’t want to give away any of the clues. If you want to read one of the best psychological mystery/thrillers out there, in my opinion, you need to get a copy right away and enjoy. I look forward to the next thrilling book that this talented author writes.

This is a wonderful collection of older Disney songs. Spanning from the beginning of Disney, to some songs from the Park to The Little Mermaid. The songs are listed in alphabetical order, they are also listed under Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3. The reason for that is that you can find all of the songs in this book on Vol.1-3 of 'The Disney Collection' CDs. I can't say much about the playability of the songs, The main reason for this review is to do one thing, list the songs in the book. So in alphabetical order the songs are: Baby Mine, The Ballad of Davy Crockett, Bare Necessities, Bella Notte, Best of Friends, Bibbid-Bobbidi-Boo, Candle on the Water, Casey Junior, Chim Chim Cher-ee, Cruella De Vil, A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes, Ev'rybody Wants to be a Cat, Feed the Birds, Following the Leader, Give A Little Whistle, He's a Tramp, Heigh-Ho, Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee, I Wan'na Be Like You, I Wonder, I've Got No Strings, It's A Small World, Jolly Holiday, Kiss the Girl, Lavender Blue (Dilly Dilly), Let's Go Fly a Kite, Little April Shower, Love is a Song, Mickey Mouse Alma Mater, Mickey Mouse March, Once Upon A Dream, One Song, Part of Your World, Saludos Amigos, Second Star to the Right, The Siamese Cat Song, So This Is Love, Some Day My Prince Will Come, Someone's Waiting for You, A Spoonful of Sugar, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room, Under the Sea, When I See An Elephant Fly, When You Wish Upon A Star, Whistle While You Work, Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?, Winnie the Pooh, With A Smile and a Song, The Work Song, Yo Ho (A Pirates Life for Me), You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, Theme From Zorro. I hope that helps someone looking for a specific song.
This collection is great. As a head's up, it doesn't have any of the newer films (Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Aladdin, etc). It has several of the old cartoons, such as Sleeping Beauty and Jungle Book, as well as some of the live action like Mary Poppins. I am always very careful to purchase the regular versions of sheet music, so this review is of the regular P/V/G book and not the easy note. As an intermediate player, I find the songs are easy enough to play without excessive practice and they are a nice trip down memory lane to all the Disney films I watched growing up. There are few, like the Davy Crockett theme, that I never play, but overall the bulk of the book are songs I want to play and are songs that can be somewhat difficult to find in newer Disney collections.
This is a great collection, especially of the older Disney movies of the 50's and 60's. I bought it particularly to get a copy of "Baby Mine" from Dumbo, and because my young female students almost always want to sing Disney songs, but I'm enjoying the array of titles in it.
My husband and I were wanting a songbook appropriate for piano and voice to sing/play at a formal gathering. This fit the bill, as it contained "When You Wish Upon A Star" and "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes", the two songs we wanted. Easy scores, but also nicely written. GREAT for any Disney song enthusiast as it contains many popular numbers and some classics too!
Great book for my amazing children. Not an easy version; great for my advanced boys....., but has a great variety!
This music book contains 54 Disney songs arranged for piano, vocal, and guitar. The songs come from Disney movies, TV shows, and short cartoons from the beginning up to the present. Most of the favorites are here: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins and the 101 Dalmatians, among others. Davy Crockett fans will be particularly pleased that 20 verses of The "Ballad of Davy Crockett" are included. This collection is not exhaustive. The book is not particularly pretty--there are no pictures aside from the cover. The music itself is not too easy or too hard--if you're looking for a musical challenge, you won't find it here--but if you're looking for music that will provide a variety of pleasant playing and listening for Disney music fans, you've found it.
If you have a child who is into music and Disney, they will love this book.
I recognized most all of the songs and appreciated that most of the songs are classic. I do wish, however, that songs from Alice in Wonderland and Robin Hood were included in there. The songs are not super-easy, but definitely not-too-difficult for an intermediate-to-advanced pianist.

Some of the experiments were explained so poorly that I had to stitch the concepts together with the help of Dr. Google, and ACS paper searches;and after I was done the book still didn't make sense. The experiments generally worked though, so once you get beyond the authors contempt for students it's a decent text. For instance consider the following sentence about putting on a pair of shoes, and consider how useful that would be for learning how to put them on. Lace the shoes, once you have the shoes on you can go walking, you must put them on, they might contain laces.
The book was somewhat useful, yet it didn't help me out much due to the course having no organized manual.
Like my professor said, this book is more than just a reference for the experiments we do in class. This book also breaks down how to write a lab report and shows an example with the explanation. Although, some of the calculation instructions are not clear. Overall, this is a good book for p-chem.
From a mathematical perspective, there could be more thorough derivations for many of the topics. However, if your generally just concerned with the qualitative chemistry this will get the job done.
This is designed as a series of experiments for the physical chemistry lab, with a little bit of exposition to describe the principles explored in each lab exercise. Paired with a good pchem textbook, this thing can be really useful.
As expected.
Thank you.
As long as you have a lab to work in this is an excellent work.

As a Spartanburg native, it is awesome to read about the history of the county. This is a very detailed and expansive history of how Spartanburg originated, and the industry that made Spartanburg what it is today. Great book!
Fascinating historical content of Southern cotton mills. Highly recommended.
Was so excited to find this book...just bought a mill house and wanted to learn more about the mills and mill villages.
As a new resident to Spartanburg I wanted to learn about the history of the area. This book is fabulous! Pictures, stories, even poems from the people who founded the town. Highly recommend.

Review
At once logical and elegantly presented, this book describes the Cycle of Intentional Practice - a tested framework for making museums increasingly relevant to the audiences they seek to positively impact. Certainly Randi Korn ranks among the clearest, most intentional thinkers in the museum field today. (Douglas S. Jones, Director of the Florida Museum of Natural History, former Chair of the Board, American Alliance of Museums)For two decades, Randi Korn has been the museum sector’s thought and practice leader around the why and how of intentional impacts. With the sector’s attention to many community and environmental contexts rising fast – such as social inequity, biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainability – aiming for, and achieving, intentional impacts have arguably ceased to be an option. In the Anthropocene, here is a tried-and-tested toolkit to guide museums towards the optimization of the external return on their investments. (Emlyn Koster, director, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences)Korn offers museum professionals essential intentional-practice principles, case studies, and exercises, inviting museums to develop their own impact statements and frameworks that will ultimately unify colleagues around a shared vision for visitor experiences. This book guides readers through a collaborative, focused, passionate, risk-taking journey. (Beverly Serrell, Director, Serrell & Associates and author of "Exhibit Labels: An Interpretive Approach")

Amazon.com Review
Book DescriptionA pioneering cardiologist and the author of the international bestseller The South Beach Diet presents the truth about cardiac care in this country and offers his proven program for preventing heart attacks and strokes. This year alone more than 1 million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack or stroke. The shocking fact is that the majority of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the medical knowledge we already possess. Yet this isn’t happening. Why? Because doctors and hospitals are paid more to treat disease with invasive techniques like angioplasty and bypass surgery than to prevent it. In his most personal and passionate work yet, Dr. Arthur Agatston champions a revolution in heart disease prevention that will enable people to stay out of the hospital and off the operating table. In Part 1 of this compelling book, he tells you why seemingly healthy people can suddenly have a heart attack and why people with great cholesterol numbers can be walking time bombs. He explains why belly fat can be an early warning sign of future heart disease and why a noninvasive heart scan can help predict your risk of heart attack. In Part 2, he presents the South Beach Heart Program, his 4-step plan for detecting, preventing, and even reversing heart disease: The 4 steps include: Heart-healthy eating, regular aerobic and core-strengthening exercise, state-of-the art diagnostic testing, and the latest heart-protective medications, as necessary. Thanks to his aggressive prevention approach, Dr. Agatston rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice. Now you can benefit from the prevention strategy he uses to help his patients every day. "What Size Is Your Cholesterol?"An Essay by Arthur Agatston, MDYou may think that the title of this article is a mistake and that I meant to say, "What Number Is Your Cholesterol?" But the fact is that the size of your cholesterol is just as important as the total number. If that surprises you, there is a good chance that much of what you think you know about cholesterol is wrong and that what you don't know about cholesterol could be killing you.Luckily, there are now tests that can determine the size of your cholesterol and whether it is a problem. And there are steps you can take to do something about it if it is. As I explain in The South Beach Heart Program, the earlier you know where you stand in terms of your risk for heart disease, the greater your chance of preventing a heart attack or stroke in the future. Before I go into how you can find out the size of your cholesterol, let me give you a little background on cholesterol in general. While there is some good helpful information in this book, it goes a bit overboard on the testing aspects, i.e. heart scans CT scans, advanced lipids etc and the list goes on. But then again, it's written by a cardiologist. I think the aspects of the diet are fundamentally good but personally feel the new gold standard title on heart health should be "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Caldwell Esselstyn. It was absolutely the best of all of those I've read. I did learn some things reading this but I would alert the reader to take some of it with a grain of salt. There are simply too many tests recommended and one probably does not need all of these tests. My belief is that if you consume the right foods, you probably won't need all of those tests. In a whole food plant based diet, you'll be healing your arteries and removing inflammation at the same time, so there should not be any need for a lot of these tests if the diet aspect is in place. I'm glad I bought the kindle version for $2.10 as I wouldn't pay much more for it.
If you have a health problem, particularly your heart, you have got to read this book. Turn back time if you make the commitment and follow through. You can be a healthier you. You can live healthy and be healthy without starving yourself or being on some ultra regimented diet/exercise program. Down to earth, realistic and doable.
This book changed my life! Being on the north side of 60, I had accumulated many bad eating habits and with a family history of heart disease I knew I was living with a short fuse. After reading "The South Beach Heart Program" I've lose nearly 20 pounds (and never remember really being hungry) and my blood work hasn't looked this good in about 30 years. Thank you Dr. Agatston.
I bought this book a month or so ago. No book (even the South Beach Diet book) has had more impact on my life, than this one. First, it made me stop and think of the abuse I have been inflicting on my body for so many years. Second, scared me into doing something about it. Thus I have been diligent following both the South Beach Diet, and starting an exercise plan I can follow and live with. The book is almost like a textbook, but with language anyone can follow. There are a wide variety of tests we need to have run to know where we stand with heart disease, diabetes, etc. And Dr. Agatston spells it all out for the lay person to understand and accomplish. This is a book that everyone who cares about living to a ripe old age should read. And you should wait till you're 50 to read it. Buy it now!! Truly, this 4-Step Plan may save your life.
Let me sum up this book in one word - FABULOUS. Dr. Agatston gets it RIGHT, and no body else has come close. The amount of incorrect information that millions of Americans are receiving about heart disease from the mass media is shocking. Very few people are doing more than ten percent of what they need to do to prevent falling victim to this COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE DISEASE.Most readers will read Dr. Agatston's book because he is the author of the wildly popular South Beach Diet, but this is a great standalone book. This is the book that the good Doctor could have written first, because he is a MASTER of heart disease. He is the creator of the Agatston scoring system, which is utilized when one has a heart scan.Maybe you haven't heard of a heart scan? Dr. Agatston talks about the new heart scanners that are available in his book. The modern heart scan which is non invasive, and takes only a couple of minutes to perform is the device that will probably revolutionize heart disease care in the next ten years. At the same time very few doctors in the United States are recommending that their patients get a heart scan. The reason is that doctors, like most of us are creatures of habit. They are also employing a business model that they don't want to change. Read Dr. Agatston's book, and you will realize that only through a painless, quick heart scan can you detect if you truly have heart disease. Oh yes, you can also detect heart disease through an $8,000 angiogram, but no insurance company will pick that up unless you have SYMPTOMS. You don't want to wait to have heart symptoms before confirming you have heart disease. One more thing you need to know and the book is clear on this point. If you have successfully passed a treadmill test, you could STILL have heart disease that is about to deliver a massive heart attack to you. The reason is that most doctors still hold to a "Plumbers view" of heart disease learned in medical school. They believe incorrectly that heart disease is a gradual build-up of a blockage(s) until the blockage completely blocks off the artery, and a heart attack ensues. We know now that this is only true for a minority of heart attacks. The treadmill test can only pick up blockages of 70% or more. The vast majority of heart attacks are resulting from blockages of 15% to 25%. These blockages have soft fibrous caps that suddenly ERUPT. A blood clot forms, and SCABS OVER the eruption, blocking the passageway, and BINGO, you have a massive heart attack. Most doctors do not understand this modern theory of heart disease, which is about 4 years old. They are still adhering to the plumbers' model, ordering treadmill a test, when they should be ordering heart scans. When you then pass the treadmill test because you don't have a 70% blockage anywhere in your system, they pronounce you fit and send you home with flying colors. Meanwhile, you could have scores of 15% or 20% blockages, be a walking time bomb, and no one is intervening.Dr. Agatston also does a fabulous job at clarifying the issue of Cholesterol. This chemical is vital to living. Our cells could not live without Cholesterol. The problem is that our bodies get too much Cholesterol with the modern diet. Our evolution is still based on the nomadic existence of millions of years of living in warm climates, with tall grasses, and a hunter, gatherer's instincts. Our modern diet produces, and allows us to inject way more Cholesterol than we need to live. What the Doctor does so well is tell you that it's not your Cholesterol SCORE that matters, but your Cholesterol SIZE that matters. It's also the type of Cholesterol that you have that matters. As they said about Godzilla, SIZE DOES MATTER. Dr. Agatston understands and explains the importance of the different types of Cholesterol particles. Once you GET IT, it will radically change your understanding of what you have to do. There are good types and bad types of Cholesterol and it's all covered in an easy to understand manner. Most doctors when they test you will not specify PARTICLE SIZE and TYPE. Your test comes back with a Total Cholesterol number, and you think you're home free. In reality you might have progressive heart disease. It's all in the book, and if you even think you have a remote possibility of heart disease, you need to be AWARE of these ideas. When you are dealing with heart disease, the patient needs to be INFORMED. An informed patient gets better care and better outcomes than a patient that says to the doctor FIX ME. There are also those patients who don't want to know about their disease, and that's not the way to go.I have read Dr. Agatston's book thoroughly, and have compared it to just about everything else on the market that's out there. It compares very favorably. He's a good writer, and the book was not ghost written for him. There are a number of books on this subject where the big guy on the cover is NOT writing the book. Medical residents, and research associates are writing them. Is this necessarily bad?If you are paying for a big name doctor to write a heart book, you want the big name doctor to have written that book. Do you want to read a book by a famous doctor on the cover, who than has a 27-year-old resident write it for him, or do you want to read the REAL THING? The South Beach Diet Program is the real thing, written by the real guy. Good luck, and get that heart scan.Richard Stoyeck
If you read the South Beach Diet you will absolutely love this book. While it touches on some of the principles of the diet, it has much more to offer. The writing style is easy to follow and very informative and the book is loaded with practical information. If you are concerned about your heart health, this book is a must read. The book has motivated me to speak to my doctor and medication and other treatments, to exercies more and eat better and healthier foods. The author is very inspiring to read as he was in the Sough Beach Diet as well. Dr. Agatston seems very well informed, educated and highly experienced in heart health matters. This bood has excellent medical advice and lifestyle recomendations to can be easily attained by all. Read this book and you too may live a longer and more productive, healthier and happier life.
Positives: delicious, nutritious food. Never felt hungry through a year of using the recipes and menus. That was five years ago and 50 pounds ago. The 50 have stayed off because I/we still eat the same way, and always will. Negatives: preparation of many recipes takes a LOT of time and access to a few ingredients that are hard to find in a small town grocery store. This would be a TERRIFIC diet if only one had someone to prepare all this food for you. Still the best diet out there; it works and it changes the way you will eat and think about food for the rest of your life.

To be clear, I am writing about this edition (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/1502767627) and my rating is NOT regarding CS Lewis' work. This edition is clearly a poorly OCRed version of Lewis' excellent work. It contains typos upon typos, what are supposed to be footnotes in the middle of sentences, and innumerable corrupted Bible chapter/verse references. This edition should be immediately recalled and the publisher should be put out of business. I returned the item and Amazon refunded my money but the item should be pulled entirely!
First of all, for readers coming out of Fundamentalism, this is still a great book, because Lewis definitely knows the Psalms that he is discussing. There is no proof texting. He makes many excellent points and observations. This book presents Lewis about as far as he gets from the Fundamentalist interpretation of the Scripture. Lewis treats the Psalms much as he would treat any ancient text: with great respect but without any sense that they are more than an ancient text of the writings and songs of devout people who worship God but worship Him in a certain amount of ignorance. But I am amazed at his dismissal and reduction of the imprecation Psalms. Surely as a scholar of ancient literature, he knew that kings uttered boasts before their convocations of all that they would do to their enemies. As men who claimed to be the divine offspring of the gods themselves, they made loud claims about the terrors and horrors they would inflict upon those who harmed them. The fact that David DOES NOT DO THIS shows a tremendous faith and humility in Israel's King. David quite literally places his boast in God, calling upon God as the defender of the nation to do these things, showing by example that he is refraining from doing them and is waiting upon God to act as Israel's sovereign ruler. Yes, the imprecatory Psalms get really colorful and vivid and horrible in what they describe, and Lewis censures them for this, but David is deliberately using the method of other nations to show that he places these matters into God's Hands. Lewis' failure to perceive this nuance disappointed me so much that the rest of the book was a bit of a letdown. If we accept David as a real, historic king of Israel, then no wonder Jerusalem was called the City of Justice, for it is clear that there were no purges or secret police under David. The imprecatory Psalms testify of this. They are very important psalms and actually serve as evidence that Israel was, indeed, a very different kingdom from her neighbors. So the book was a bit of a let down for me in one sense, but still very worth reading and very insightful, I would recommend it to anybody just emerging from Christian Fundamentalism. Lewis is truly, devoutly Christian. But he has a different point of view from those of us who grew up in the most conservative corners of Christendom. Exposure to his ideas and POV is a good thing.
At the moment I just 60% through the book; but I am very satisfied with my Purchase!C.S. Lewis is his typically self in the writing of this book: with his always analytical and philosophical way of thinking, evident in his writing. The book is a general commentary on the Psalms. Lewis talks about his concerns and understanding of the Psalms as a Christian reading it and not necessarily as a professional in the field of theology, which he makes clear in the preface.I must warn however to read with open but not a too open mind, Lewis makes a lot of great observation but remember these thoughts are just his and not all of them will fall into the traditional understand we have as Christians. Now, I will make it clear: C.S. Lewis is my favorite Christian author. With that said I tried my best to be as objective as I could.
This is a very different way of introducing yourself to the Psalms. It is also a very delightful experience to expand your understanding of the Psalms, Scripture, and Life. It does not attempt to be a "study of the Psalms." It is not definitive. But it does offer so very much more than any study I have read. This (the Harvest Book) is the version of this booklet you want. Avoid, like the plague, the versions where this is reprinted as part of a larger volume, these larger volumes may look nice and have leather bindings, but they are nearly useless. That is because the page numbering must be as the original booklet. At the back is Appendix 2, "Psalms Discussed or Mentioned", and it is critical to opening up the full appreciation of this booklet. Also there is Appendix 1, "Selected Psalms", which has the text of the Coverdale translation of seven Psalms. This is the original translation of the Psalms to English, it is very poetic, and it is the version said and sung in Anglican churches for about 500 years Why does this matter? C. S. Lewis was Anglican, and that Church has worshiped using the Psalms for 500 years. One Psalm is said or sung in every service.C. S. Lewis begins this booklet, "This is not a work of Scholarship. I am no Hebraist, no higher critic, no ancient historian, no archeologist. I write for the unlearned about things in which I am unlearned myself." He then likens his book to two students solving problems together rather than consulting the expert teacher who was very likely to "explain what you understood already, to add a great deal of information that you didn't want, and to say nothing at all about the problem that was puzzling you."I must say that it was impossible for me not to grow in appreciation for the Psalms as I read this booklet. I also grew my appreciation of Mr. Lewis, of course, and in my appreciation of art. Art in the largest sense, where one sees the art in counting, dance, music, language, the universe, chaos, ...Mr. Lewis composed this as essays on themes is the Psalms, like Judgement, Cursings, Death, "The Fair Beauty of the Lord", "Sweeter than Honey", Connivance, Nature, Praising, Second Meanings, Scripture, and, curiously, "Second Meanings In the Psalms." These are arranged and progress as chapters, but I have found that randomly opening and re-reading an essay is profoundly satisfying and enlightening. Unlike so many studies where one can always predict what comes next, in Lewis' work there is always a delightful surprise coming in the next paragraph or page. The ninth chapter, "A Word About Praising," is a great example. I just re-read it. He starts, "It is possible (and this is to be hoped) that this chapter will be unnecessary for most people. Those who were never thick-headed enough to get into the difficulty it deals with may find it funny." I suppose some may find it funny, but I am notoriously thick-headed, and I wonder, each time I read it, if I will actually understand the joke this time. When I finish, I know I do understand, but the joy I learned about praising has yet to translate into any laughter from me, though I can imagine an angel or two -- or Lewis -- snickering at me behind a folded wing or hand.Read this for a love of language, art, history, or God. There is gold at the end of each chapter.
