What an absorbing flow of prose is provided Bob Dylan's Nobel Lecture! An articulate roundabout thru his songs' long and deep relationship to grammar school's western civ lit!Think All Quiet on Western Front/Masters of War or The Odyssey/A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall or Moby Dick/Jokerman and certainly many and much more. There is much to mine about his process and purpose in these few poignant pages, a real gift to his fans and critics.Six decades on this profound artist is still busy being born to which he seems committed from here to the dying stone. Oh, who among them do they think could bury you?
Cute, well made.
As described
What can I say that hasn't already been said. I have followed Dylan since his first album, and felt that he deserved the Nobel Prize. His lecture was wonderful.
Bob Dylan deserves all his recognition. The true value of this very short book is that it in his own words. He begins by saying that Buddy Holly was one of his first inspirations. Bob says Buddy was age 22 and Bob said he himself was about 18, when Bob saw Buddy at a concert. The true fact is that Bob was 17, and not 18, when he saw Buddy play at a concert at Duluth, Minnesota in late January of 1959.Bob is correct in saying that Buddy died a few days later. On February 3, 1959, Buddy died in the airplane crash along with two other music stars . One was the ‘Big Bopper’ and the other was Ritchie Valens. Ritchie Valens ( Richard Steven Valenzuela) was born on May 13, 1941, 11 days before Bob Dylan ( Robert Allen Zimmerman) was born , on May 24,1941. Ritchie was 17 years old when he died.In Bobs lecture, he mentions three books, that he read in grammar school, that profoundly impacted him. One was “ All quiet on the Western Frontâ€. Today, I just happened to see Humphrey’s first film role in “ The Petrified Forest “ ( 1935).There, one lead character, who was a writer, mentioned the book, “ All quiet on the Western Frontâ€. Now, I must read that book! The digital book is $10 - the same I would pay for a hamburger meal. This is a very low cost for a lasting and insightful book on Bob’s influences and creative ideas.I recommend this important book.- Louis R. Velasquez , San Diego, California
