I own half a dozen of Barber's books and borrowed another half from the library throughout the years. I felt like I had enough of him when I bought this book and finally realized that my love for his drawings kept me attracted to his books, while his lack of teaching kept me from achieving his level. Yes, you get a lot of projects and the steps, but the instructions are truly lacking. You'd think he would at least describe the steps and the techniques and most importantly, what pencil shade. Nope. It's like this: 1. draw a contour. 2. shade. 3 shade some more. 4 add finishing touches. And that's pretty much it. It's me who has to analyze the pictures long and hard trying to figure out the kind of marks, where he did what and so forth. I can do that with any picture on the internet, I don't need to buy a book with pretty drawings for that. And he's not the only artist looking to make money on his notoriety without actually sharing much of his knowledge. Sheer dishonesty. This is the last book I am purchasing from Barber.

Lovely book for a beginner, nice projects to give you a good range sketches..
