About the Author

Gary A. Ritchie received his PhD in 1971 from the University of Washington, where he majored in forest biology. Following two years active duty in the U.S. Army, he joined the research and development staff of Weyerhaeuser Company, a Tacoma, WA forest products firm, where he served as a research scientist in plant physiology and ecology for 29 years. He retired in 2001 as Senior Scientist. During that time he publish over 150 scientific papers, invited conference papers and book chapters. He also served as referee for seven international plant science journals, Affiliate Professor of Forest Resources at the University of Washington, and Science Adviser in the U.S. Senate in 1976-77 as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Congressional Science Fellow. Over the past 35 years he has been a dedicated gardener specializing in growing roses, shrubs, flowers and vegetables. He has written more 40 articles on gardening and rose culture in several magazines, including "Mid-Columbian" magazine and "American Rose", and has been in demand as a lecturer at various west coast gardening venues. He was recently awarded both the Bronze and the Silver Honor Medals from the American Rose Society. Dr. Ritchie lives with his wife, Marilyn, on the shores of beautiful Puget Sound in Olympia, WA where they enjoy sea kayaking, hiking, boating, photography and, yes, gardening.

If plants could talk, this would be the story they tell. This is how I felt reading through Gary Ritchie's new book, "Inside Plants." On the one hand, it's a scholarly textbook that would work at any university level of formal education. On the other hand, it transports you into the hearts and minds of our photosynthetic friends found in the backyard, the neighborhood, the world. Whether you have 5 minutes or 5 hours available for inspirational reading, the book works. At least for a moment in time (perhaps longer), you might see the simple plant world around you as something new and refreshing. The author's enthusiasm is exhilarating!

This is a very entertaining book that takes sophisticated science and makes it easy to understand for just about everyone. What I loved about this book was the way I was able to apply it to improve my gardening techniques. The diagrams are very useful and easy to understand. As an educator, I loved the way he talks about everyday science in a way that I can easily convey to my students; this makes what we learn in class much more relevant. I plan to buy several copies for our media center and for my colleagues.

Inside Plants, is more than a book for dedicated gardeners, it is also a great reference for all serious botanists regardless of their training level. The illustrations are superb and the writing style engages the reader as if you were being coached by your best mentor. I only wish I had this for a textbook in college.
