These days (the years post-Reagan), during the resurgence of populism, there are a few of us (and getting fewer all the time) who hold to the core, large-R Republican principles as modified after the debacle of the Smoot-Hawley tariff. Essentially a small-ell libertarian core (as opposed to a libertine or anarchistic core), which properly understood is moral conservatism in civic matters (not social conservatism). With the exceptions of some economic insights not available at the time of the founding of the USA, the vision of the Republican Party, to which a few of us still hold, was the vision of the US founding fathers, the vision of Abraham Lincoln, of Frédéric Douglas, of Ronald Reagan. Winthrop encapsulated the mission in his sermon, “A Model of Christian Charity”, Jefferson and the Second Continental Congress encapsulated the principles and vision in the Declaration of Independence, Bastiat, an admirer of the US, encapsulated the principles and vision in *The Law*, the economics in *Economic Harmonies*, and the macroeconomics in his Parable of the Broken Window, Lincoln encapsulated the mission and vision in his Gettysburg Address, the then-newish Republican Party encapsulated the principles in the 14th Amendment’s section 1, Martin Luther King, Jr. encapsulated the principles in *Letter from Birmingham Jail*, Milton Friedman encapsulated the economics in *Capitalism and Freedom*, *Money Mischief*, and *Free to Choose*, and Reagan encapsulated the principles, vision, and mission in *A Time for Choosing* and in his Farewell Address. During the years after Reagan, many of us in the Republican Party were concerned about the influence of RINOs (Republicans In Name Only). But those people were generally more like the “Compromise-Whigs” of old, moral cowards who didn’t have the backbone that cones from understanding the right principles well-enough to be able to explain and defend them. As bad as that was, the bigger RINO threat was from the growing populism in this nation, with the impetus in that growth coming from independents, third-partners, and the generally disaffected looking for payback for…whatever. The grassroots tea party movement—which was not astroturf as has been alleged, but started out as a small-ell libertarian moment—was quickly co-opted by resentful populists (please pardon the redundancy) who were anything but libertarians. Claiming to be conservatives, they were actually social conservatives, not moral conservatives (although they’ll go to the mat defending themselves as moral conservatives). Engaging in scapegoating, racism, and other bigotry (as that word is commonly used, today), as well as obsessively turning to conspiracy theories, they were and are collectivists, placing the selves squarely on the left of the political and moral spectrum. With the increasing acceptance of fascism, socialism, and communism in the Democratic Party, the rise of populism and fascism in the Republican Party resulting from the tea-party and the Trump insurgency, the confusion of populism and libertine anarchism in the Libertarian Party, and the generally leftward tilt of independents and other third-parties, there are increasingly few of us remaining who hold to the vision of the US and the pre-Trump GOP. Even people who were modern guiding lights, like Dennis Prager, John Lott, and Thomas Sowell, are turning from our scientific, foundational, and Biblical principles as they relate to the border and immigration. The RINOs have taken over the Republican Party, the Rhinoceros have taken over the US. These days, Ionesco’s play, *Rhinoceros*, isn’t absurdist allegory. It’s prophecy being fulfilled.

Warning: The Kindle version is essentially Cliffs notes in French. It does not contain the play, nor does it appear to resemble a the printed book in any way.

The book is great! But it came ripped due to poor packing.Rhinoceros is relevant in an age of institutionally and politically driven fears and hatred. Touches on many points of absurdity, dangers in group mentality, and blind fear of loneliness, all wrapped in humor.

"There are more dead people than living. And their numbers are increasing. The living are getting rarer."-Ionesco.Ionesco wrote this play in his traditional style, that is, using humor and the idea of the ridiculous to develop satire. Rhinoceros is a commentary on Nazism and a result of Ionesco's experiences with fascism, yet it is extremely readable, if one remembers not to take it to seriously. That being said, the lessons it offers are serious, concerning groupthink, the absence of rational thought in humanity, and the slippery slope to an unconventional, self-destructive conclusion. And yes, this book does contain plenty of rhinoceros, in a small town, stampeding out of control. Cue the ridiculous: enjoy!

Euguene Ionesco (1912-1994) was born in Romania, but lived a great part of his life in France. He was an important exponent of what became known as "the Theatre of Absurd", a kind of avant garde theatre that was born more or less in the 1950s and that somehow manages to transmit a message through irrational speech and strange occurrences that take place in what seem at first glance as common situations. Other exponents of this kind of theatre are, for example, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet and Harold Pinter"Rhinoceros" was written by Ionesco in 1958, and has a strange plot. The main character is Berenger, a Frenchman who likes to drink a lot. Berenger doesn't seem to mind when a rhinoceros first appears running past his town square, while he is talking with his friend Jean. Everybody else is astounded, but they are truly horrified when the same rhinoceros (or maybe another one) returns and even kills a cat. Even that doesn't shake Berenger, unfortunately. The situation is almost dramatically altered later, when Berenger realizes that many of his acquaintances are turning into rhinoceros without apparent reason. The pertinent questions are quite a few, for instance: will rhinoceros ultimately prevail?. And can an average person resist to conformity, or is the temptation to be like everybody else to big?.This book can be understood as a metaphore regarding nazism and its diffusion in Germany, and has a lot to do with Ionesco's experiences with the Nazis. However, its main theme is the rise of totalitarism, the kind of behaviour and relativism that takes a country to that, and the dehumanization of those that succumb to conformism (like the human beings that slowly turn into rhinoceros, almost indistinguishable from each other). Due to that, "Rhinoceros" was considered a dangerous play by more than one totalitarism. For instance, the play was to be produced in the URSS, but the government wouldn't allow it to be played if Ionesco didn't say that the rhinoceros were the Nazis and not them. As Ionesco refused to do so, "Rhinoceros" couldn't be played...On the whole, I can say that I really liked this play. It is interesting, easy to read (yes, without overly difficult vocabulary!!) and has a deeper meaning that shouldn't be lost to us. That is, conformity isn't the answer when an stampede of "rhinoceros" tries to run over us...Belen Alcat
