I really really liked this book. I had seen all the true crime shows related to this case. And there was always just something about the accounts that didn't add up--just didn't make sense. This book gave me some insights that caused it all to make much more sense--as much sense as EVIL can ever make! What I just never caught (if it was even said?) in the tv shows was about how the woman's father was such a powerful political entity in the Nazarene "Church" organization. It described just how significant the Nazarene college was to the town, politically and financially, and so forth. And apparently, this might have had something to do with the killers going free for so long. Also, it seems as if the woman's father used whatever political clout he had as a powerful "church" official to control the behavior of others if it suited him. It is truly mind-boggling to realize that people would do such a thing, as to murder this woman's husband while he was sleeping. Much less people who make such a prominent claim of being a follower of Jesus Christ. But then, since I have had a little personal experience being around people who are members of what is called the Nazarene "Church", for many reasons, it is NOT surprising. The actual surprise would be that such things don't happen more often within this group. One does have to wonder though, HOW could these people, Melinda and her lover, do such a thing, and then just go on with their lives as if nothing at all had happened. And then, when they are caught, THEY STILL KEEP LYING AND TRYING TO GET AWAY WITH IT!! This is NOT Biblical Christianity!!! One of my favorite true crime books.

I enjoyed this book because of the contradiction between the religious beliefs and lifestyles of the accused and the horrible murder. But I did not get any insight into the characters of the wife and her boyfriend--at the end of the book I still can't imagine that they could have committed the crime. Also from the evidence presented in court, it seems amazing that anyone could have been found guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Perhaps more research or interviews could have provided the reader with a better feel for the motivations and feelings of the accused?

"Don't believe everything you read" is demonstrated by this book to a T. We both knew almost everyone involved, as college graduates from MANC and as an attorney for one of the individuals. There are so many facts that are easily checked out, yet this author was either too lazy or incompetent to bother with, so he just wrote whatever he wanted. I have never read an account that is so off-based in my life, and we own over 2,000 books. He must have been limited in his interviews and resources, becasue this book is chock-full of holes. Some of his accounts are based on old rumors that were never proven. Sloppy, lazy writing.

I wanted to read this because I live in the city where it happened. The author makes everyone in the story sound like idiots, except the last 2 detectives. It comes off like it was written by someone at TMZ. That said, it's the only book I know of about this murder, and it did have lots of information. If you want a well-written crime story, this isn't it. And definitely don't get the audiobook--the narrator will make you want to throw things.

Love true crime books, but this one is nothing special. I don't feel like the author wanted to get his hands dirty by actually investigating the couple who committed this crime. It just kind of leaps from the day they leave Kansas until the day they're arrested. Lazy reporting if you ask me. The author clearly didn't bother to check with friends, family or neighbors. I was able to find out more online than the author reported.

This is a sad story of the death of a young husband who probably never realized he was married to and best friends with two people who were very evil. It's a cautionary tale for all those who believe that just because someone goes to church and "presents themselves well" it doesn't mean they aren't capable of the most heinous act of all, killing someone who loves them while he is defenselessly sleeping. Good reporting by the author. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes the true crime genre..

This book contains a compelling story, and one that could lend itself to much more analysis and detail than is given. Some of the more intriguing aspects are glossed over, such as the conspicuous absence of Melinda's father during her trial and her careful avoidance of admitting specific details. Why the author chose to vaguely refer to her linguistic acrobatics without giving examples is anyone's guess. The result is a book that feels more like a dry overview than an in-depth narrative.

An interesting book which tells the story of a in twenty year old unsolved murder. It was unsolved, yet everyone believed they knew who had committed the killing. This is the tale of how the presumption murderers were brought to justice.
