Review

From easy reader and chapter book series to epic fantasies, favorite characters, settings and story lines reemerge in new additions. Young readers will welcome the return of Mo Willems's pessimistic pachyderm and spirited pig. In There Is a Bird on Your Head! Gerald the elephant despairs over a family of birds that nests atop his cranium, while Piggie is delighted. And in I Am Invited to a Party! party expert Gerald helps Piggie prepare for all possibilities, as they get dressed for a fancy party, pool party and costume party-all at the same time. PW"It helps to have a best friend when you run into trouble, whether it's the what-to-wear-to-a-party kind or the wildlife-on-your-head variety. Like the first two entries in this beginning reader series (My Friend Is Sad and Today I Will Fly!, rev. 5/07), each of these books features a simple story told entirely through speech balloons and Willems's emotive pig and elephant characters. The animated illustrations will help new readers decode tone and meaning while the spare dialogue enhances the pictures' slapstick humor. High-spirited Piggie has never been to a party; when she receives her first invitation, neurotic Gerald takes charge of their attire. "I know parties," he claims, but Piggie and young readers may have doubts about that when Gerald insists they dress for "a fancy pool costume party." In the end, Gerald proves to be savvier than he and Piggie look. In the second book, two "love birds" make a nest on Gerald's head. Cause enough for panic, but when their three eggs hatch (in record gestation time), hysteria ensues. Luckily, Piggie has a good head on her shoulders. The minimalism of both the text and the uncluttered pictures focuses readers' attention and moves the stories forward. Party on, Elephant & Piggie! Horn Book"Beginning readers familiar with Willems's books will recognize his distinctive humor and illustrative style in these stories. When Piggie receives her first invitation to a party, she asks Gerald to join her and relies on his advice because he "knows" parties in order to prepare for the big event. The elephant, however, has a tendency to overanalyze, so he prepares them both for any contingency a fancy/pool/costume party. Piggie's expressive features show her questions about their attire, but the friends set off bedecked in flippers, masks, top hat, pearl earrings, cowboy hat, and evening dress. Imagine her surprise when they find all the other guests as lavishly overdressed as they are. In the second title, Gerald learns that there are worse things than a bird on your head, namely, two love birds, a nest, and three hatchlings. With the help of Piggie, he is finally able to ask them to move, but, as the final page reveals, they have become her problem. Both books use speech bubbles gray ones for Gerald, pink for Piggie to tell the entire story. This feature is a nice touch that facilitates paired/choral readings. The conversation between the friends flows smoothly and allows beginning readers to practice expression as they read. These appealing titles will tickle the funny bones of children and are sure to become favorites. SLJ"

My daughter loves these books! We just read this one for the first time the other night and she smiled through the whole thing. The stories are always very simple and the illustrations help tell the story. This one is pretty easy to explain... a bird lands on Geralds head (to which he is very upset), then another bird comes, they build a nest and hatch some eggs... all to his frustration. Then he has to get them to leave.

My son came home from Kindergarten with an Elephant and Piggie book (My Friend is Sad) and we all laughed each time we read the book. There is a Bird on Your Head is just as delightful (my kids favorite, although I thought My Friend is Sad was better). We are all hooked! I've never seen my son want to read books on his own as much as with these books. I find him reading them out loud in his room all the time. I plan to purchase all of them!

We have the entire set. This was the first one we received as a gift and started our collection. My kids are 4yrs & 7yrs old now. We've been reading these books since my older son was 2 or 3. The stories are solely told in word bubbles as conversations between the 2 main characters, plus a few recurring characters who stop by in some of the stories. We each choose a character to 'be' and then we read the story, which is simple sentences of easy words. I honestly believe these books were a huge factor in my older son teaching himself to read at a very early age. We routinely give E&P books as gifts, and I always keep my eye out for new ones and pre-order well in advance. It's a nice little package that comes out of the blue, and both my boys are very excited when the UPS man brings us a new E&P book that they've never seen before. Our all-time favorites are:Watch Me Throw the Ball - I love the moral of the story where the most important thing is to have a good time, even if you're not a pro.Can I Play Too? - love this one because it teaches you to think outside the box and make the most of what you have.

Mo Willems is the hero of every parent of early readers. Rather than senseless stories consisting of painfully few simple words, Willems provides silly stories with actual plots. His stories range from being utterly ridiculous (a bird family nesting on Gerald the Elephant's head, in this one) to the serious--bullying, friendship, sharing. The only caveat is that readers of the Elephant and Piggie books need to know a certain number of sight words. (And before you jump down my throat about that, try explaining to your kid how to sound out "was," "have," or "said.")All three of my kids loved reading these books over and over when they were learning to read, and neither my husband nor I minded hearing them as often as they wanted to read them. (Actually, the kids still get excited if they happen to run across them, and they're 7, 9, and 10 now.) Frankly, I've yet to meet anyone who DOESN'T like Gerald and Piggie.

I purchased this book for my 6-year old granddaughter, who is beginning to read on her own. The story is simple, yet quite amusing, so it is enjoyable for the reader and her audience. The illustrations are also simple, but effective for the text. I recommend this author's books for early readers.

My four month old son loves these books! He enjoys looking at the pictures and hearing us read these books to him. Even my 5 year old niece loves them. The stories are well written, sometimes a bit silly (but who doesn't love silly?). The price is great and I continue to buy more and more books by this author. My son's all time favorite yet is "We are in a Book", so grab that one if you haven't yet. Also, each book does have a subliminal message with each story. This one is about how if you don't like what someone is doing, for example: A bird on your head builds a nest, then ask them nicely to leave and they will. Definitely worth the money and the smiles!

My six year old son loves this book. He's read several Gerald and Piggie books but this is his favorite. They're silly and easy to read for little ones just learning to read somewhat independently. I highly recommend them for beginning readers. There's a few words I had to help with, but after reading it many times, he remembers them.

Mo Willems is the best, and "Bird on your Head" doesn't disappoint. Use your words kids, you only have to ask! While we love Elephant and Piggy, our favorite characters from Willems are the Pigeon and Duck. Either because they were the first ones we experienced or they are just silly fun! A Mo Willem's book will always catch my eye and the binding and paper feel sturdy and strong. Darling illustrations by the author.

We are big fans of Elephant and Piggy books. As a parent, it's nice to find a book that you enjoy as much as your kids. My kids are getting older, but I have no intention of getting rid of these books. Bought this as a gift to introduce another child and her parents to a great series of books.
